Reverend Algie Lavern “Al” Green, Jr. passed away at home in Iuka, MS, on March 7, 2018, following a lengthy bout with cancer. Rev. Green was a faithful servant of the Lord in four different churches, mainly in the southern part of Mississippi, and he and his wife, Emily, were international missionaries in Argentina for 16 years. After retirement he continued to preach at Oldham Baptist Church in Iuka, MS, where they encouraged him to preach sitting down until a month before his passing. His legacy will be carried on by his wife, his children, the pastors he mentored, and anyone who had the pleasure of knowing him.
Al was a quiet and peaceful man with the blessing of serenity that only comes from God. If he had nothing to say, he kept quiet. He was not quick to advise unless he knew in his heart the truth of a matter. As a pastor, he preferred doing funerals to weddings because he knew that in today’s world the former lasted longer. Rev. Green’s main gift in preaching was simply teaching God’s word. His dry wit and humor punctuated his sermons. He often said that the church had to provide an example of God’s love to the world. Al was pastor of First Baptist Church in Bay St. Louis during and after Hurricane Katrina. Many fellow believers who volunteered their services will remember him for his faith, compassion, and never-ending dedication to doing God’s work and exemplifying a loving and helpful Christian devotion during the time of rescue and reconstruction.
In his spare time, Al passionately followed Ole Miss sports and kept numerous friends’ computers running smoothly (he was a computer geek at heart). He will be missed by friends, family, and fellow Christians in Argentina, on the Gulf Coast, and Iuka.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, March 17, at the Iuka Baptist Church. Visitation is scheduled for 9:30 a.m. until service time at the church on Saturday, March 17. Cutshall Funeral Home of Iuka, MS is entrusted with arrangements
Al is survived by his wife, Emily Gurley Green of Iuka. He was a loving husband with not a selfish bone in his body. He was also a great father to two children, Dr. Donnis Hackney and husband, Glen, of Birmingham, AL, and Neil Green of Hattiesburg. He taught his children to be kind and independent, being an example of love and patience. Al supported Emily and the children in every educational and career endeavor they ever wanted. Al is also survived by a sister, Patrice Neel of Lumberton; and three grandchildren, Layla Green, Corran Hackney, and Harper Hackney.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Iuka Baptist Church Eight Days of Hope Houston, Texas Relief Fund. An online guest book may be accessed at www.cutshallfuneralhome.com.
