John Whitner Young

John Whitner Young, 63, born on September 6, 1961, in Oxford, Mississippi, passed away peacefully at his home in Iuka, Mississippi, on Monday, March 31, 2025. John graduated from Iuka High School in 1979 and had been a devoted member of Iuka Baptist Church since he was a teenager. He worked as a lead hand at G&G Steel for 16 years and enjoyed spending his time off outdoors. He was an avid outdoorsman that loved hunting for deer and Indian artifacts. He was a member of the Central States Archeology Society and the Genuine Indian Relic Society, and his finds and different displays got him recognized many times throughout the years in the societies’ books and shows. Along with his Indian artifacts, he also enjoyed collecting Iuka and Pickwick memorabilia that he kept displayed in his home. Above all else, however, John loved his family. His grandson was his whole world, and he was incredibly proud to be his grandfather. He never missed a chance to brag about him and show off his pictures. John is survived by his daughter, Whitney Young Works (Garrett); his stepson, Jay Lambert; his grandson, Bennett Hayes Works; and a host of other family members and friends. He was preceded in death by his mother, Bessie Mae Young Hayes; his father, John Henry Young, Jr.; and his grandparents, Raymer “Mama Whit” Wilson, John Whitner “Daddy Whit” Wilson, Linnie Young, and John Henry Young, Sr.; and his cousin, Mike Wilson. Cutshall Funeral Home in Iuka, MS, is entrusted with the arrangements. Visitation is scheduled from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, April 2, 2025, at Iuka Baptist Church. Visitation will continue on Thursday, April 3, 2025, from 10:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. at Iuka Baptist Church. Funeral services will follow at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, at Iuka Baptist Church, officiated by Dr. Johnny Hancock. Pallbearers include Huey Adams, Raymond Buse, Steve Sheffield, Eric Daniel, Kevin Crouch, and Bobby Borden. Honorary pallbearers include Jerry Willard, Todd Scammell, Alan Smith, Brian Ramsey, Jason Southward, Matt Anglin, and Jay Lambert. Interment will be in Cypress Grove Cemetery.
