Christine Burcham Jourdan, age 98, was called home to be with the Lord on November 19, 2017, after peacefully crossing over while residing at Baldwyn Skilled Nursing Home in Baldwyn, MS. Born Nov. 1, 1919 in Holt Spur, MS to parents Minnie Bell Ross and William Kirby Burcham, Christine was the eldest daughter of six children who all preceded her to Heaven and are undoubtedly having The Homecomin’ of ALL Homecomin’s as we speak! She was proud to have graduated from the one-room schoolhouse of Burton High School where she played on the basketball team. She loved dancin’ the jitterbug, singin’ and pickin’ the guitar at the old ice cream socials, and being courted by her soon-to-be husband, Parmer Lee “P.L.” Jourdan (also part of this Heavenly Homecomin’!). They married just before P.L. left for WWII.
Christine and P.L. had three children: Ronnie Lee Jourdan, who preceded her in death (we can just see him squeezing his way to the front of the Homecomin’ line!), Julian Craig Jourdan and wife, Sandra, of Saltillo, MS, and Kristy Jourdan Weiss of Lake County, CA. Her children loved her dearly, and will treasure the many years they enjoyed her unconditional love for them and their children.
Sweet memories include Christine cheerin’ and hollerin’ for her favorite NBA team; competitive Skip-Bo games with her friends and family—with everyone vying to be her partner, for THAT would be the winning team; her homemade pumpkin bread and Christmas goodies that were coveted by all; her love of sports and the Olympic Games; her love of family and friends; and her love of this country. We fondly remember her favorite song, “Somewhere Over the Rainbow”, for it gave her hope as a young child to endure the hard times, and endure she did! We praise God that she has awakened where the clouds are far behind her and her dreams really have come true!
Christine will be sorely missed by her dear friends, with special mention of Opal & family, Cecil, May and Johnny. Mrs. Jourdan’s friends meant the world to her, as did her Jourdan and Burcham families scattered from Tishomingo County to Florida, to the Mid-West and back. She knew she was blessed to be loved and embraced by them through thick-and-thin. Not to mention her beloved cousins, Faye and O.L. Robinson of Farmington, TN; and sister-in-law, Mely Burcham, of Rienzi, MS. They all shared many-a-laugh and many-a-blessing together during her long tenure here on earth.
Mrs. Jourdan’s biggest legacy remains in her grandchildren and great-grandchildren: Kristin Jourdan of Saltillo, MS and her children, Brenna, Shylan, and Ember; Lee Jourdan of Corinth, MS; and Andy and Matt Weiss of Los Angeles, CA. Mamaw’s unwavering love and support for each of her grandchildren will forever leave her handprint of grace that forgives all things and has compassion on all.
A Celebration of her Life will be held in her honor Friday, Nov. 24 at Cutshall Funeral Home, 302 N. Pearl Street in Iuka, MS. Viewing is from 10 am – Noon, with a service immediately following. For more information and an online guest book, visit their website at
