Mary Evelyn Gurley Wheeler

Mary Evelyn “Sis” Gurley Wheeler, 93, of Iuka, MS, passed away on Saturday, December 31, 2016, at Carrington House Assisted Living in Iuka. Mrs. Wheeler was born on August 27, 1923, to Curtis Dudley and Stella Crawford Gurley in Dorsey, Itawamba County, Mississippi. She was a member of the Iuka Baptist Church. She was employed for many years at Iuka Guaranty Bank where she worked as an assistant cashier, eventually retiring to care for her mother and husband. Mrs. Wheeler was also a long-time member of the Lucy Rowe Club. Funeral services are scheduled for 1:00 p.m., Tuesday, January 3, at Cutshall Funeral Home Chapel in Iuka, officiated by Rev. Roger Wood and Rev. Al Green. Interment will follow in Cypress Grove Cemetery. Pallbearers include Gary Bullard, Pat Gurley, Dale Gurley, Danny Young, Daniel Young, and Herman Nunley. Visitation is scheduled for 11:30 a.m. until service time at the funeral home on Tuesday. Cutshall Funeral Home of Iuka, MS is entrusted with arrangements. She is survived by one sister, Betty Young of Iuka, and a host of beloved nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Cortis Basil Wheeler; her mother, Stella Crawford Gurley; one sister, Bonnie Ruth Bullard; and three brothers, Aubrey Laverne Gurley, Billy H. Gurley, and Loren Dale Gurley. Memorials may be made to the Iuka Baptist Church or St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
