September 18, 1921 — December 25, 2012

Elizabeth “Sug” Russell Baker of Gallatin, Tennessee and Iuka, Mississippi, formerly of Huntsville, Alabama, passed away into eternal life on December 25, 2012 surrounded by her family. She celebrated Christ’s birthday in His presence. She was born in Huntsville, Alabama to Harry Lee and Elizabeth Cobb Russell, who preceded her in death. She was an exceptional homemaker, avid gardener, a member of the Eastern Star and Iuka Baptist Church. She was a caregiver for her late husband Marvin Lester Baker, who preceded her in death. Through the years she endeavored many activities. Her top two priorities were always family and church. She was passionate about the American Red Cross, which she devoted years of volunteerism to, reading, learning, study clubs, book clubs and garden clubs. She was talented in piano, voice and design. She first played the piano in church at age eight. She is a graduate of the American Institute of Banking. She was Miss New Hope High School. She was a devoted wife, wonderful mother, and mother-in-law, and an adored grandmother and great grandmother. She was preceded in death by three brothers and one sister. She is survived by one daughter Gwen (James) Dowland of Gallatin, Tennessee; a granddaughter, Kim (Matson) Sanderson of Nashville, Tennessee; and great granddaughters, Eva-Elizabeth Russell Sanderson (her namesake) and Mattison Maclaine Sanderson of the home and a host of nieces and nephews. A celebration of life and faith service will be Sunday, December 30th at 2:30 pm at Iuka Baptist Church, Visitation will be 1:00 to 2:30 pm at the church prior to the service. Reverend Gary Watkins will officiate with Gwen Baker Dowland as eulogist. Interment will follow in Oak Grove Cemetery with family and friends serving as pallbearers.
