Dimple Smith Underwood, 92, of Muscle Shoals, Alabama, passed away Thursday, April 26, 2012, at Florence Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. Dimple was born in Cherokee, Alabama on July 2, 1919. She was the final survivor of the family of Jim and Lela Smith.
Funeral services are scheduled for 11:00 a.m., Saturday, April 28, at Cutshall Funeral Home Chapel in Iuka. Services will be officiated by friends and family. Interment will follow in Oak Grove Cemetery in Iuka, MS. Visitation is scheduled for one hour prior to service time at the funeral home on Saturday. Cutshall Funeral Home of Iuka, MS is entrusted with arrangements. Dimple was preceded in death by her husband, Auby Underwood; one son, Charles A. Underwood; her parents, Jim and Lela Smith; and seven siblings.
The family lived several years in Memphis before moving to Los Angeles where they lived until retirement. Survivors include several nieces and nephews. Two nieces, Betty McWilliams and Shirley Isbell, and one nephew, Dr. Samuel Williams, were primary caregivers during the last years of Mrs. Underwood’s life.
Mrs. Underwood was a secretary and a self-taught romantic who wrote poetry and other offerings. She prided herself in counting Elvis Presley among her friends and wrote “An Ode to Elvis” in his honor.
Her poise and beauty were acknowledged when she was chosen 2010 Valentine Queen by the Florence Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. The family wishes to acknowledge the professional and kind services of Florence Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.
