Merle L. Nelson, 87, of Iuka, Mississippi, died Saturday, September 24, 2011, at the North Mississippi Medical Center in Iuka. Mr. Nelson was a member of the Iuka United Methodist Church and a U. S. Air Force veteran of WWII and the Korean Conflict, having served as both a pilot and an instructor. He earned a Bachelors Degree in Education from the University of Mississippi, and was a member of the Iuka Lodge #94 F&AM. He was a well-known and respected local businessman, having owned and operated Mill Creek Boat Dock, Nelson’s Marine, Nelson Finance Company, and Nelson’s Supermarket. He enjoyed playing golf, bird hunting, and raising cattle. Visitation is scheduled for 4:00 until 8:00 p.m., Monday, September 26, at Cutshall Funeral Home in Iuka. Funeral services are scheduled for 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, September 27, at the Iuka United Methodist Church, officiated by Rev. Jon Kaufman. Interment will follow in Oak Grove Cemetery. Cutshall Funeral Home of Iuka, MS is entrusted with arrangements. He is survived by 2 sons, Steve Nelson and wife, Sheri, and Mike Nelson, all of Iuka, MS; and 3 grandchildren, Stacey Nelson of Iuka, MS, Mollie Nelson of Iuka, MS, and David Nelson and wife, Erin, of Chapel Hill, NC. He was preceded in death by his wife, Helen Nelson; his parents, Omer and Altie Nelson; and a brother, O. C. Nelson.
