Jewell Kitchens

Jewell Kitchens, 97, of Iuka, Mississippi, died Thursday, July 7, 2011, at her residence. She was an active and lifelong member of Iuka Baptist Church. She was a very accomplished homemaker that enjoyed sewing, crocheting, and quilting. She was a charter member of the 20th Century Club, and was a member for 75 years. She was a 1935 graduate of the Mississippi State College for Women, and was in the Vertically Elite Club there for her straight posture, which was a big honor during that era. She also helped manage Eastport Marina for 25 years. Visitation is scheduled for 5 until 7 PM on Saturday, July 9 at Cutshall Funeral Home in Iuka. Funeral services are scheduled for 1 PM on Sunday, July 10, 2011 at Iuka Baptist Church. The body will lie in state at the church for one hour prior to service time, and will be officiated by Rev. Dr. Ronnie Hatfield. Interment will follow in Oak Grove Cemetery. Grandsons and grandsons-in-law will serve as active pallbearers. Earl Walker, Melvin Davis, Edgar Lambert, and Hugh Van Presley will serve as honorary bearers. Cutshall Funeral Home of Iuka, MS is entrusted with arrangements. Survivors include 1 son – Dr. Ben Kitchens (Joy) of Iuka, MS; 1 daughter – Martha Carol “Kaki” Bates (John) of Signal Mountain, TN; 1 sister – Lila Frances Foote of Iuka, MS; 6 grandchildren – Kaki Kitchens Pulliam and husband, Dr. Rob Pulliam, of Nashville, TN; Craig Kitchens Oliverius and wife, Allison, of Charleston, SC; Laura Kitchens Horn and husband, Dr. Tom Horn, of Philadelphia, MS; Drs. Kecia Kitchens Kirk and husband, Alden of Oxford, MS; Cande Oliverius Cook and husband, Cal of Nashville, TN; Benjamin Robert Bates of Chicago, IL; and 10 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death her husband, Bryce Kitchens, and her brother, Carl Edward Broughton. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Iuka Baptist Church Fund, or the Iuka Public Library.
