Reared in hard times, he saw animals as a source of life and living, making more than pleasure and pastime, and he was always kind to animals. He worked hard from an early age, once remarking that as a young man he didn’t believe man could ever overtake the Great Southern forest. He formed a habit of reading two chapters a day from the Bible and praised the Creator, sometimes by creating.
