Charles Dwayne Evans, 69, of Iuka, Mississippi, died Monday, December 20, 2010, at the Magnolia Regional Health Center in Corinth, MS. Mr. Evans graduated from Smithville High School in 1958. He then earned his B. S., M.Ed., and Educational Specialist degrees from Mississippi State University. Charles was an educator and began his teaching career in Shannon. He also taught at Hatley Elementary and later served as principal of Furlow Elementary in Americas, GA. He moved to Iuka in 1970 where he served as principal at Iuka Elementary School for 30 years prior to his retirement in 2000. He was a member of the Iuka Baptist Church were he served in different capacities. He was a long-time member of the Rotary Club where he was awarded the Paul Harris Fellow and served as president. He also served as president of the Iuka Jaycees. Charles served as Boy Scout Master of Troop 26 in Iuka for many years. He was a member of the Tishomingo County Retired Teachers’ Association, and has served on the North Mississippi Medical Center – Iuka Hospital Board from 1997 until present. He was the recipient of the prestigious Boy Scout Silver Beaver Award given by the Yocona Area Council. Charles loved to travel, and his hobbies included fishing and hunting. He liked to keep in contact with his former students and enjoyed hearing of their successes. The joy of his life was spending time with his grandchildren. Visitation is scheduled for 4:00 until 9:00 p.m., Wednesday, December 22, at Cutshall Funeral Home in Iuka. Funeral services are scheduled for 12:00 noon, Thursday, December 23, at the Iuka Baptist Church, officiated by Rev. Jim Manley, Dr. Ronnie Hatfield, Elder Clinton Barnett, and Rev. Stanley Magill. A committal service will be held at 3:00 p.m., Thursday, December 23, at New Salem Cemetery in Fulton, MS, with interment to follow. Pallbearers include DeWitt Bean, Herbert Thomas, Bobby Joe Stevens, Billy McKissick, Jerry Reese, George Yow, Lyndon Cain, Evan Adams, Lloyd Murrah, and Ben Patton. Honorary Pallbearers include Eddie Woodruff, James Parker, Tom White, Jimmy Ramsey, Hosea Thorne, Gary Bullard, Jerry South, Fred Truesdale, Mack Lloyd Wadkins, and Dr. Jerry Clay Stone; the Iuka Baptist Church Men’s Sunday School Classes; the current and former members of Iuka Boy Scout Troop 26; the Iuka Rotary Club; and the school personnel that he served with through the years. Cutshall Funeral Home of Iuka, MS is entrusted with arrangements. He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Wanda Christian Evans; 2 sons, Charles Christian Evans and John D. Evans and wife, Jennie, all of Iuka, MS; 1 sister, Linda Evans Adams and husband, Kenny, of Amory, MS; 3 grandchildren, Jacob Owen “Jake” Evans, Anne Christian “Annie” Evans, and Lucas Reed “Luke” Evans, all of Iuka, MS; and 1 nephew, Evan Adams of Foley, AL. He was preceded in death by his parents, Owen H. and Daphne Elliott Evans. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Iuka Baptist Church Stained Glass Window Fund, the Charles D. Evans Memorial Scholarship Fund at Renasant Bank, P.O. Box 357, Iuka, MS 38852; or to the charity of the donor’s choice.
